What makes a book become a bestseller?
Q. Is it advertising, word of mouth, etc? Give your opinion.

A. Several years ago I read an article where a critic was asked this question. His answer was blunt: it's by the number of books sold. The more copies sold, the higher it goes on the list. Of course that means there's usually some buzz about the book so the author gives interviews (print, personal appearances, television, etc) to get the title out. The more successful writers have agents who put ads in magazines, send copies to reviewers, do all kinds of advance work including making sure bookstores have display room for copies. Naturally the bigger the name of the author (i.e. Stephan King, Harlan Corbin, Dan Brown) the more attention it's going to get. People like Oprah who have started book clubs on a national basis have done… [cont.]
